Staff Selection Commission (SSC) has released a notification to conduct Computer Based Examination for the recruitment of 731 Stenographer Grade ‘C’ (Group ‘B’, Non- Gazetted) and Stenographer Grade ‘D’ (Group ‘C’) vacancy in various Ministries/Departments/Organizations including their Attached offices, Subordinate offices and Statutory bodies of the Government of India located in various States and Union Territories. Eligibility Criteria of SSC Stenographer Recruitment
Age Limit:
Stenographer Grade C: Candidate age must be between 18 to 30 years as on 01.08.2026, i.e., candidates born not before 02.08.1996 and not later than 01.08.2008 are eligible to apply.
Stenographer Grade D: Candidate age must be between 18 to 27 years as on 01.08.2026, i.e., candidates born not before 02.08.1999 and not later than 01.08.2008 are eligible to apply.
Age Relaxation: Category-wise age relaxation is as mentioned below.
Application Fee: Category-wise application fee is as under.
Stenographer Grade D: Candidate age must be between 18 to 27 years as on 01.08.2026, i.e., candidates born not before 02.08.1999 and not later than 01.08.2008 are eligible to apply.

Scheme of Examination
The Stenographer Grade ‘C’ and ‘D’ Examination, 2026 is to be held as per the scheme shown below.
Type of question: Question paper will be of Objective Type Multiple Choice only.
Medium: The questions will be set both in English & Hindi.

Negative marking: There will be negative marking of 0.25 marks for each wrong answer in Computer Based Examination.
Normalization of marks: Marks scored by the candidates in Computer Based Examination, if conducted in multiple shifts, will be normalized by using the procedure published by the Commission vide Notice dated 02-06-2025 and such normalized scores will be used to determine final merit and cut-off marks.
Negative marking: There will be negative marking of 0.25 marks for each wrong answer in Computer Based Examination.

Skill Test in Stenography
Candidates shortlisted in the Computer Based Examination will need to appear for a Stenography Skill Test. In this test, they will receive a 10-minute dictation in either English or Hindi, based on their choice in the online application. The dictation speed will be 100 words per minute for the Stenographer Grade ‘C’ post and 80 words per minute for Grade ‘D’. Afterward, candidates must transcribe the dictated passage on a computer within the prescribed time limit, as detailed below.
The Skill Test will be held at the Commission’s Regional Offices or at other Centre(s) as may be decided by the Commission.
Document Verification (DV)
Document Verification (DV) will be conducted by the User Departments/Organizations after declaration of the final result.
CBE Syllabus
Here is the indicative syllabus for Computer Based Mode Examination.
General Intelligence & Reasoning: It would include questions of both verbal and non-verbal type. The test will include questions on analogies, similarities and differences, space visualization, problem solving, analysis, judgment, decision making, visual memory, discriminating observation, relationship concepts, arithmetical reasoning, verbal and figure classification, arithmetical number series, non-verbal series etc. The test will also include questions designed to test the candidate’s abilities to deal with abstract ideas and symbols and their relationship, arithmetical computation and other analytical functions.
General Awareness: Questions will be designed to test the ability of the candidates‟ general awareness of the environment around him and its application to society. Questions will also be designed to test the knowledge of current events and of such matters of everyday observation and experience in their scientific aspects as may be expected of an educated person. The test will also include questions relating to India and its neighboring countries especially pertaining to Sports, History, Culture, Geography, Economic scene,General Polity including Indian Constitution, and Scientific Research etc. These questions will be such that they do not require a special study of any discipline.
English Language & Comprehension: In addition to the testing of candidates' understanding of the English Language, its vocabulary, grammar, sentence structure, synonyms, antonyms and its correct usage, etc., his/ her writing ability would also be tested.
